Patti Pease Johnson will offer a pair of workshops July 9 at Waimea Arts Council.

The 3.5-hour “Pastel Still Life Painting” workshop starting at 9 a.m. is for beginner and experiences artists ages 18 and older. Attendees will follow a proven, signature, circular step-by-step process, to complete a 9-inch-by-12-inch soft pastel of a setup still life.

The workshop will begin with a discussion on the types of pastels, papers, fixing and mounting. Then, attendees will use pastels on newsprint to get the flow of arm movements to keep loose. Next they’ll follow the circular method.

Johnson will teach a workshop titled, “Experimental Watercolor” at 2 p.m. Each student creates up to five separate 8-inch-by-8-inch watercolor paintings using broken glass as a catalyst. Theories of good composition will be discussed, along with color theory and color wheel use. Abstractive qualities are the focus using three paints right out of the tube with the glass. Then, after the first drying and glass removal, each piece is brought to further expressiveness by using other detailed watercolor techniques of washes, spatters, lifting, value gradations, dry brush and more. This 3.5-hour workshops is also geared for beginner and experienced artists age 18 and older.

Cost for each workshop is $50 for nonmembers and $45 for WAC members, plus a $10 supply fee.
